Jamali* is a resilient mother to a young daughter, navigating life with a spinal cord injury from a workplace accident that caused chronic back pain, which was further exacerbated by a car accident. Her husband gave up work to dedicate himself to being Jamali's primary caregiver since the incident. They were living in a private rental home with her in-laws and faced significant challenges from both the environment and on their relationships. Jamali’s daily life was difficult as the home lacked space and accessibility. Steps at the front door meant she could only enter the property via the garage, and she was unable to make necessary modifications because they were not residing there long-term.
Jamali contacted Vera Living’s local Participant Engagement Specialist, and they listened to her needs: full accessibility, ample space and assistive modifications. They supported her to find a three-bedroom High Physical Support home in her local area that meets her needs. The spacious home is complete with modifications and bespoke design to support enhanced independent living. Jamali’s dedicated Vera Living Tenant Support Specialist facilitated a transition at her pace to ensure her comfort and happiness in the home.
This transition marked a significant turning point for Jamali. The home’s thoughtful design and ample space allows her to navigate freely and has given her safety and independence. Located in her desired area, this made it ideal for remaining close to family. Her daughter’s school life is unaffected, and she has her own area to grow and play. The overall family dynamic has improved, and her new supports in the home has reduced the strain on her husband to care for her, giving him the opportunity to return to work.
Jamali has been able to keep her supports and local healthcare, and in a short time achieved two of her NDIS goals: gaining independence in her home and accessing a safe living environment. The positive impact of her new home goes beyond physical space, and has created a safe and nurturing environment where Joanne and her family can thrive together.
