Miranda’s Journey: From Sofa Surfing to Living Independently in Specialist Disability Accommodation

Miranda*, a woman in her late 50s who is a wheelchair user and works mostly from home was struggling with inaccessible housing and limited independence. She was sofa surfing between friend’s houses before settling in unsuitable temporary housing that forced her to rely on her male flatmate for support with everyday tasks, such as going to the toilet, showering, and preparing meals. In her words, this “affected my dignity.”
Miranda needed to find a suitable home. Her support coordinator, reached out to Vera Living after having previously collaborated with them to support another NDIS client. Vera Living’s Participant Engagement Specialist understood Miranda’s need for more independence, space, and privacy, and worked closely with her to find a home that met her accessibility needs and lifestyle.
Moving into a fully accessible SDA apartment has been life changing for Miranda. With her own space, an accessible kitchen, bathroom and her own private balcony, she now has a forever home where she can look after herself and work, with access to onsite support when she needs it. She enjoys moving with ease throughout her apartment and making choices about her day without relying on others.
The location has added even more value to her life. Miranda enjoys meeting friends at the café downstairs and being less than 10mins to the local shopping centre that she can access independently.
More than just a place to live, Miranda’s new home has supported her with greater independence, dignity, and confidence. It’s a space designed around her needs and lifestyle, enabling her to live safely and on her own terms.
