Lisa’s Journey: Stressful Shared Living to Her Very Own Accessible SDA Apartment

Lisa*, a woman in her late thirties was living in a shared apartment which was causing her great stress. She struggled living with others and often felt intimidated, leaving her to avoid shared areas and spend most of her time in her bedroom. She needed a home that allowed her to live more independently with privacy, choice, and control over her daily routines, and where her preferred service provider could continue supporting her.

Her support provider, who had collaborated with Vera Living before, reached out for help. Understanding Lisa’s needs, Vera Living’s Participant Engagement Specialist provided personalised guidance, focusing on finding her a home that would give her autonomy, safety, and confidence, while keeping her support provider.

Moving into her own Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) apartment has been transformative. She loves having a home that is completely her own without having to share with others. The accessible design means she can manage daily routines comfortably and structure each day on her terms, whilst accessing support from her preferred provider as she needs. She feels empowered and proud, enjoying the privacy and freedom her new home provides.

Lisa's apartment is more than just four walls for her. It has restored her sense of dignity, control, and wellbeing. She can now pursue hobbies and live more independently in a home designed around her needs and lifestyle.
