Emily’s Path to Independence: From Group Living and Hospital Stay to Her Forever SDA Home

Emily* spent 15 years in a group home with seven others, where her needs were not fully met, but was unaware of Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). After a mobility-impacting incident and prolonged hospital stay, her Supported Independent Living (SIL) provider was unable to continue support, prompting the search for a new SDA home.
After several months in hospital, Emily contacted Vera Living to help her search for an accessible home. Her local Participant Engagement Specialist listened to her needs:
- a care provider that meets her support needs
- space for friends and family to visit
- and access to the local community.
The Vera team were able to help her find just that.
Emily’s Participant Engagement Specialist worked closely with her to identify a home that met her care requirements, allowed family and friends to visit, and provided community connection. She moved into a spacious, three-bedroom SDA home with two housemates and a dedicated Tenant Support Specialist, ensuring a smooth transition as well as comfort and happiness in her new home.
Emily is now able to receive the care and support she needs, with easy access to her local community and stronger family connections. Her connection with her family has grown immensely and they enjoy visiting often, making the most of the privacy Emily has access to in the additional living room. Emily now enjoys a well-balanced life, doing things she loves and hosting friends and family in her home.
