Sophie’s Fresh Start: Independence and Confidence Through Specialist Disability Accommodation

Sophie*, a vibrant young woman in her early twenties, has recently began a new chapter of independence in her brand-new Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) apartment in Sydney.

After spending almost a year in hospital, Sophie returned to live with her parents while continuing her recovery. While grateful for their support, both Sophie and her family felt that she was ready to take the next step toward independence. She wanted to reclaim her daily life, get back to university, and enjoy the freedom of having her own space – making an SDA apartment the perfect solution.

Sophie’s Support Coordinator introduced to her Vera Living, who worked closely with her to find a home that met her needs and aspirations as a young adult seeking independence. She wanted to be able to live independently with onsite support when she needs it, and to be near friends and university.

Since moving into her new home, the transformation has been remarkable. Sophie has embraced her independence – decorating her apartment in her own style, hosting friends regularly, and has returned to university, which is only a short ride away on the Metro. Her confidence and wellbeing have flourished, supported by the caring onsite Supported Independent Living team with whom she has built a warm and trusting relationship.

Sophie’s story is a powerful reminder of how the right home can nurture independence, confidence, and hope – empowering young people to live life on their own terms.
