Emelia's Story - From a Year in Hospital to Independent Living and Studying
“The first night here to be honest, I could breathe again for the first time in so long”
Growing up Emelia was an active kid, she enjoyed hiking, being a scout and was always out and about. At 14, that changed when a surgery triggered life-changing conditions, that affected her mobility and independence.
At 20 years old, she spent 373 days in hospital fighting for the NDIS support she needed. This was a tough time physically and emotionally for Emelia, and she felt like she had lost everything.
Her story doesn’t end there.
Today, Emelia is living in a Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) apartment which has given her greater independence and control over her life. She now hosts friends and family, cooks her own meals and can get back to doing what she loves to do, including attending university. Her apartment is her own sanctuary and safe space where she can relax, cuddle her pup and come home to a place that’s hers.
