Brent’s Path to Independence: How an Accessible SDA Home Transformed His Family’s Life
_1HSz9m.webp)
Brent, a teenager, was living in a private rental with his family that was unsuitable for his support needs. The cramped house was challenging for Brent to navigate without damaging doors and hallways in the home.
His family contacted Vera Living’s local Participant Engagement Specialist about Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), and Brent was able to communicate his needs:
- full accessibility
- privacy
- space
- proximity to school and friends
The Participant Engagement team supported Brent and his family to access Appendix H funding, enabling them to live together in a spacious High Physical Support SDA house. The modern, 3-bedroom home features wide doorways, two living areas, and oversized ensuites, providing independence and comfort while still being close to school and friends. Brent’s new long-term housing solution has brought stability, improved family dynamics, and enhanced Brent’s education and social life.
The ability to live in the home long-term has alleviated the stress of continuously searching for suitable rentals to meet Brent’s needs, giving Brent and his family peace of mind and a sense of security and stability. More than just a house, the home has given them a nurturing space where their family can thrive.
