Patrick’s New Chapter: Safety, Independence, and a Place to Call Home

At just 17 years old, Patrick* was living in an unstable and abusive home environment and felt anxious and unsure of his future. After an unexpected stay in hospital and only one week until discharge, Patrick didn’t feel safe to return home and was at risk of homelessness. He needed to find a safe place to live. Patrick contacted Vera Living. From the very first conversation, the Participant Engagement team, they listened, understood, and guided him through the process of Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). With the help of his supports, Patrick’s needs were fully met and understood.
Finding the right home wasn’t just about having a roof over his head. It was about creating a space where Patrick could feel safe, independent, and supported. Patrick moved into a purpose-built SDA home designed for comfort, accessibility, and long-term stability.
Transitioning to a new home from an unsuitable environment is daunting, and Patrick was supported by Vera Living’s Transition Coordinator throughout. He now has his own personal space designed the way he likes, has independence in his daily routine and enjoys local community activities.
Today, Patrick is thriving. He’s enjoying greater independence from living in a suitable home, feeling secure knowing he is safe and can plan for the future. With Vera Living, Patrick didn’t just find a home, he found a fresh start, a place to belong, with the chance to thrive in a stable environment.
